How To Remove the Close button from Firefox Browser Tabs?

Published by: Alex George on February 19, 2025

John Yaniv called me for a strange support issue yesterday. He is a friend of mine and a business client. His hardware shop uses billing software developed by CoreNetworkZ Tech Solutions. Okay, let me explain the problem he faced.

His kids played on his laptop, and the close button on the top-right of the Firefox browser went missing. He called me to find out why it happened.

Today's post explains the reasons for the absence of a close button on John's laptop's Firefox browser and how I fixed it.

Can I Remove the Close Button On Firefox Browser?

Thomas Espirian asked this question in the comments. The answer is yes. Let me explain this answer in this section.

Firefox is one of the popular browsers with many stunning features.

We can edit the default looks and features on Mozilla Firefox. Let us check how to modify the default feature of this browser by editing the configuration.

This tutorial explains how to remove the close button from Firefox browser tabs.

After completing the procedure, there won't be an option to delete the tabs without closing the entire window. You don't need to worry because you can always reverse the changes you made.

Steps to Remove the Close Button from Firefox Tabs

Let me give a small introduction about the way this tweak works. To perform it, we need to log into the config page. Then, edit the value of the browser.tabs.closeButtons from default to 3. It will remove the close button from all Firefox tabs.

Anagha Dalvi asked me to write the instructions step by step. So, I suggest readers to follow the steps below.

  1. Start the Firefox browser.

  2. Login to the about:config window

To remove the close button from Firefox tabs, log into about:config. To do this, type about:config on the address bar and press the enter button. Now, you will see a warning message.

    No Close button

    Click the button to continue.

  3. Change the value of the browser.tabs.closeButtons to 3.

Browse for browser.tabs.closeButtons in about:config page and modify the value by right click on it. Change the default value to 3.

This new value will remove the close button from Firefox browser tabs.

There is No Close Button To Terminate the Firefox Tabs

Jeremy Freeman mentioned a different problem in his comment. He uses a Linux laptop, and the Firefox browser tabs do not have the close buttons.

Let me answer Jeremy's question now. All you have to do is continue the steps from 1 to 3 and change the value from 3 to 1. It will bring back the Firefox tab close button.

    Hello Alex,

I have a similar problem. My Linux laptop's Firefox browser tabs do not have the X marks. Is it normal or can I change it back to normal?
