Registering Domain Names in Hindi Script

Updated by: Alex George on March 18, 2025

Has anyone checked how the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs website uses Hindi characters in the URL? If not, I suggest you visit the following link and see for yourself.

https://गृहमंत्रालय.सरकार.भारत/en

The Ministry of Home Affairs website uses the Devanagari script in its domain name. However, the internal link structure is in English script.

That shows the domain name is in pure Hindi.

I must admit, I did not know it was possible until one of our readers mentioned it.

Sanjay Malhotra, one of the regular readers of articles published by CoreNetworkZ Tech Solution, informed me about this new pure Hindi domain name of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs website.

Sanjay runs a Hindi website and is thrilled to know he can register a domain name with pure Hindi letters. He asked me how he could register a domain name in Hindi script.

Is It Possible to Register a Domain Name in Pure Devanagari Script?

The answer is Yes. We can register a domain name with pure Hindi letters. The best example is सरकार.भारत domain name.

Have a look at the screenshot below.

Register a Pure Hindi Domain Name

It is a screenshot of the Ministry of Home Affairs website. As you can see, they use a subdomain.

https://गृहमंत्रालय.सरकार.भारत/en is a subdomain of सरकार.भारत.

The domain name is in pure Hindi, so I checked for more websites using domain names with pure Hindi alphabets.

I did a Google Search and was surprised with the search results. I found a few domain names registered with pure Hindi words (in Devanagari script).

How To Register a Domain Name in Hindi Writing Letters?

Fortunately, a few domain name registrars provide services for registering domain names in various Indian Languages. I searched domain registrars who support this feature and prepared a list.

I sent that list to Sanjay and asked him to use Hindi Unicode. He successfully registered his first pure Hindi Bhasha domain name.

Can I Register Domain Names in Other Indian Languages?

Senthil asked this question when I shared this news with him. Most readers know Senthil CA as the Chartered Accountant of CoreNetworkZ Tech Solutions. If anyone does not know him, I suggest reading this article.

Senthil helped me to prepare and publish this article. Now, let us come back to the topic. He wants to register a domain name for his office with pure Tamil writing letters.

We can register a domain name using the Tamil script.

I told Senthil that he could register domain names in Tamil without issues. However, not all domina extensions are available for domain names using Indian language scripts.

Domain extensions .com and .भारत will work. I have seen a .net extension with a Hindi domain name. I don't know how many other domain extensions are available.

Can I Register a Domain Name in Any Language Letters?

Do you wish to check if you can register a domain name in your mother tongue? If yes, you must check whether your language is one of the IDN-supported languages.

IDN = Internationalized Domain Names

IDN languages are the only languages that support domain name registration other than English.

Ashwathy Kurup asked in the comment section whether she could register a domain name in Malayalam script. The answer is yes. Malayalam is an IDN-supported language.
